My wife was watching the Cataclysm trailer last night on our TV (we’ve discovered the magical ability to stream video directly, it’s all fantastic and magical and don’t stare at me like that I know you all already knew how to do it) and turned to me with that particular look that means ” I’m frustrated with something that you have no control over at all but you’re the only one in the room ” which, to be fair is a look I get as well from time to time. Her brow furrowed as the list of upcoming features for Cataclysm scrolled by.Finally, she exhorted me to discover just what had happened to customizable dances. She also forced me to do an imitation of the voice over from the trailer if it were the only way anyone could talk. “I need to go raid the bathroom of unremembered eternity ” I said in my best Chris Metzen as I considered her question. What did happen to customizable dances? Or Stormwind Vault , for that matter? It’s been in the game files since the game launched, but we’ve never heard a peep out of the place. It looks likely we’ll get to raid Tol’Barad before we set foot inside the Vault. So now I’ll ask you, what didn’t make it into the game that still leaves you wondering, why? Night Elf Mohawks and Mohawk Grenades? I should know by now that Blizzard can throw a curve ball better than anyone, but the announcement of Mr. T hacking into the World of Warcraft and handing out completely whimsical, nonsensical items still caught me by surprise. Any Blizzard fan knows that humor plays a big part in their games, and WoW has been no exception — Azeroth is rife with in-game jokes, pop culture references, puns, easter eggs, and silly items like, well, Mohawk Grenades. It sometimes gets silly to the point where it just doesn’t make any sense. There isn’t even any deep lore to it (which is probably what got our resident lore nerd Alex’s knickers in a bunch)… there’s just this strange-looking Night Elf handing out grenades in starting areas. Coupled with the television commercial where Mr. T brags about hacking into the World of Warcraft , it all seems very meta. I like the way the game doesn’t take itself seriously, but this latest gimmick comes so far from left field I don’t quite know what to think. What’s your take on World of Warcraft’s whimsy? A lot of items, particularly from loot cards, are silly, like the D.I.S.C.O. or Ogre Piñata . Others are pretty badass like the Spectral Tiger . Not everything is necessarily tied in to lore, and that’s alright. But where do you think Blizzard should draw the line? When does a joke ruin the game world or immersive experience? Or is everything fair game? Following its announcement at BlizzCon ‘09, players have been looking forward to seeing just how the new legendary two-handed axe, Shadowmourne , will be created and how it’ll function. Today, Blizzard fills us in on the details … well, sort of. In their official preview of the weapon , Blizzard fleshes out its backstory as the Ebon Blade’s premier anti-Arthas weapon. Forged from the hardened blood of Yogg-Saron, empowered with the souls of the deceased, encased in ice from Arthas’ own Frozen Throne, the axe is intended to be a true match for Frostmourne. But at what cost? Blizzard has yet to reveal the weapon’s stats, but the soul-stealing proc on it is pretty neat. Here’s hoping it’s not too much of a pain to craft. Patch 3.3 is the last major patch of Wrath of the Lich King . With the new Icecrown Citadel 5-man dungeons and 10/25-man raid arriving soon, patch 3.3 will deal the final blow to Arthas. WoW.com’s Guide to Patch 3.3 will keep you updated with all the latest patch news. It was a fleeting dream, but a marvelous one, wasn’t it? Attend BlizzCon all day, gamble all night, sleep never. The thought of a Las Vegas BlizzCon pretty much sent us here at the WoW.com into immediate spasms of joy. Unfortunately, they were quickly supplanted by howls of pain and anguish as we discovered that it just the Las Vegas Convention Center jumping the gun , and that we’ll probably still be headed to Anaheim for the next BlizzCon. Don’t me wrong, Anaheim’s pretty cool and all, but it isn’t Las Vegas, that’s for sure. So unfortunately, I’ve had to cancel my plans to get a gonzo lawyer and rent an Impala , but what you gonna do? At least we still have the TCG. Maybe one of these years Blizzard will see the light. In the meantime, we’ll just continue toiling away in the WoW.com salt mines here as we dream of the big city. This week, there’s plenty of news to work through, and with a 3 AM to 11 AM Pacific downtime, you’ll have time. Check out the latest gems we’ve unearthed for you after the break.
