Neophyte warrior Meryl of Aman’Thul has a story to tell. While waiting for a three-hour tour from Booty Bay to Ratchet, Meryl glitched out, force-quit the game, and ended up in a no man’s land underneath Arathi Highlands. “Arathi!? How bizarre!” she writes “But it doesn’t end there. So I resurrect just outside Hammerfall, fearful for my life at the hand of its fearsome guards … and find that there aren’t any. The only mobs around are … wait … are those Savannah Prowlers? Why is the game telling me I’ve discovered Ratchet? Why did that lion fall from the heavens?” In this particular picture, Meryl is about to be crushed by a falling Barrens meteorite, transplanted from across the sea by the magic of glitchery. Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We’d love to see them on Around Azeroth ! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@gmail.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next! Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word “Azeroth” in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing — use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards, Val’kyr on mounts, or pictures of the Ninja Turtles in Dalaran. Older screenshots can be found here . Our friends at Joystiq reported on this fascinating survey by GamesIndustry.com that broke down responses from 13,000 US and EU citizens about how they spend their gaming time. While they don’t have specific numbers for World of Warcraft , the survey says [PDF link] that overall, 15% of gaming time is spent playing MMOs. US players spend about 14% of their gaming time on MMOs, while EU players range from 8% to 16% by country. In the EU, 14% of all players have played an MMO, and in the US, 21% of everyone playing games has played a massively multiplayer online game. Again, these numbers aren’t specifically for World of Warcraft (and because the survey went down to age 8 and up, they do include the vast virtual worlds aimed at children, like Club Penguin and Disney’s Toontown , which probably throw the numbers off quite a bit), but they do show the effect that WoW has had on the gaming population over the last five years. Five years ago, MMOs were definitely a niche — some hardcore gamers played them, but most people didn’t have the Internet connections to play an online game, much less pay a subscription for one. Nowadays, MMOs represent over one out of every ten minutes of overall playtime, and those numbers are only going to go up. Ready Check is a column focusing on successful raiding for the serious raider. Hardcore or casual, Vault of Archavon or Ulduar, everyone can get in on the action and down some bosses. I like the phrase real time execution when talking about raid management. It sounds real raid-like doesn’t it? We’re not fighting these bosses in a turn-based atmosphere. We’re providing them some real time execution. This time it’s for real, and this time, you’re getting executed! No more of this “it’s only a set back nonsense!” Real time execution is not a science. It’s a skill and it’s an art. When you refer to “real time execution,” you’re talking about the actual nuts and bolts of running the raid right now , in the instance, as-it-happens, Leeroy Jenkins style. RTE is the on-the-spot management a raid leader performs to overcome performance issues the raid is having right now , which cannot (or should not) wait for down time for remediation. Real time execution is also noticeably different from long term management techniques. In a perfect world, when you’re coaching a raid member, you’d like to be able to document their issues, work with them to find solutions, and tend to their emotions and feelings. During real time execution, however, you want your raid member to stop standing in that fire please. So, take a look behind the cut, and let’s talk about executing the real-time stuff. Two Bosses Enter … but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com’s series of fantasy death matches. This season’s combatants come from the original five-man instances of Wrath of the Lich King . This week’s Two Bosses fantasy deathmatch throws another loser who was voted back into the competition into the pit: King Dred, who lost his last match against King Ymiron , returns to test his claws against the subtle insinuations of Herald Volazj. Volazj is riding high in this season’s tournament, easily winning his first matchup against Novos the Summoner and then shutting down Grand Magus Telestra . This week’s ground rules: Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools and comparative overall damage output. This deathmatch takes place in neutral territory, which shall in no way hinder either opponent from using his usual resources. Don’t get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter. Don’t neglect style, story and scale. Let the doors open, and let the contestants come forward. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls … Dyin’ time’s here . Two Bosses Enter … but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com’s series of fantasy death matches. This season’s combatants come from the original five-man instances of Wrath of the Lich King . Returning underdog Loken showed why he was among the fighters readers voted back into the season, downing Gal’darah this week in the Two Bosses Thunderdome. Fifty-eight percent of the vote went to the Dark Titan from the Halls of Lightning. Gal’darah brought in some positive comments but ultimately lacked the votes to carry him through. Elovan : Gal’darah could easily shift to rhino form and simply Impale Loken anytime he tries to use his novas. That plus his insane whirlwind could take down Loken pretty easily imho catharsis80 : Don’t forget Enrage, enabling him to attack 125% faster than Loken does, and considering the article says they have “comparative overall damage output”… Yeah, I think the results are quite obvious, since Gal can interrupt and Loken can’t. PLUS, Pulsing Shockwave will do practically nothing to Gal, since he’ll be all over Loken like white on rice. Nolls74 : This, plus Gal has his rhino buddies who will charge Loken and knock him around like a rag doll. All of you picking Loken have no sense of style and are only judging it based on “Loken sucks for players; he must be the ultimate boss.” Continue reading One Boss Leaves: Loken shockwaves Gal’darah Filed under: Analysis / Opinion , Fan stuff , Features , Lore , Bosses , Two Bosses Enter One Boss Leaves: Loken shockwaves Gal’darah originally appeared on WoW.com on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 11:00:00 EST.
