Shade : He constructed a World Tree without the blessing of the dragon flights, causing a tree that is warped and corrupted enough that it’s being invaded by harpies, grell and grelkin, and corrupting the furbolgs that are supposed to be living happily on it. A tree that invites the invasion of satyr — and the satyr are referenced in the War of the Ancients trilogy as being products of Sargeras, warping some dude with a god complex. Silithus ? He defended Silithus once, yes — and watched his son ripped apart before his eyes in the process. That broke him. He shattered the Sceptre of the Shifting Sands , the key to opening the Gates of Ahn’Qiraj , when the dragon flights asked him to keep guard over it in the event that the Qiraj returned. He said he was done with the dragon flights and done with protecting the place. His last words upon leaving the scene were as follows: “My son’s soul will find no comfort in this hollow victory, dragon. I will have him back. Though it takes millennia, I will have my son back!” You want to know what he’s doing with the morrowgrain? He’s trying to find a way to use it to bring his son back from the dead. He may have been a “leader” at some point, but after the War of the Shifting Sands , everything — and I mean everything — that man does is somehow related to his son’s death. … well, at least, that’s what I’m putting my money on. Every Wednesday, Chase Christian of Encrypted Text invites you to enter the world of shadows, as we explore the secrets and mechanics of the rogue class. This week, we talk about what’s shaking for rogues on the patch 3.3 PTR. If you’ve logged into WoW at any point in the past few days, chances are you’ve been a target of the infamous Turkey Shooter . Someone on the Blizzard World Event team decided to put us in the crosshairs during this Pilgrim’s Bounty holiday season , via the Turkey Lurkey achievement . Orc and dwarf rogues are especially vulnerable, as your rarity will have people spamming trade chat with shouts of “I found one near the North Dalaran bank!” Outside of this Thanksgiving-themed festival, there have been a ton of changes for rogues in other aspects of the game. The patch 3.3 PTR has been buzzing with new changes, affecting us from levels 1 to 80. Considering it’s likely to be the last major content patch before Arthas goes down, this is Blizzard’s last real attempt to finalize any balancing issues before they’re pushed to Catacylsm . I believe that with a few tweaks, rogues can be more versatile than we ever have before. A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned the idea of using spells based around procs or on-use trinkets. Now I don’t know about you, but I sometimes tend to forget that I have these on-use abilities. Other times I never notice procs going off. But first, what is a proc anyway? A proc is short for procedure. They are events that happen when conditions are triggered. For example, Val’anyr will trigger a buff for the user when they heal players. This buff then grants the player to place shields on anyone they heal. Two Bosses Enter … but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com’s series of fantasy death matches. This season’s combatants come from the original five-man instances of Wrath of the Lich King . We’ve got adds here, people: it’s Gortok Palehoof (Utgarde Pinnacle) versus Krik’thir the Gatewatcher (Azjol-Nerub). Gortok steps into the Thunderdome fresh from a resounding defeat of Lavanthor , while Krik’thir arrives after besting the Commander Stoutbeard/Kolurg from The Nexus. Let’s review the ground rules: Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools and comparative overall damage output. New clarification : All of the competitors’ abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents. This deathmatch takes place in neutral territory, which shall in no way hinder either opponent from using his usual resources. Don’t get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter. Don’t neglect style, story and scale. Let the doors open, and let the contestants come forward. Welcome back to Know Your Lore, WoW.com’s column about the story behind the game we all play. A featured questline in Patch 3.3 , the story of Quel’delar is available to any player who attains the Battered Hilt , which can drop from any mob in the Icecrown Citadel 5-man dungeons. But what’s the story behind this ancient and powerful weapon? Long ago, the night elves and the five Dragonflights worked together with great ceremony to forge a set of incredibly powerful prismatic swords, intended to be the first line of defense against any evil that would challenge the races of Azeroth: Quel’serrar , the High Blade, and Quel’delar , the Sister Blade. Quel’serrar was gifted to the night elves, but ultimately nearly destroyed. For thousands of years it remained partially intact with the Shen’dralar of Eldre’thalas, who anticipated that one day it’d be possible to reforge the blade. Only recently did this occur, with heroes reforging the blade in the flames and black heart of Onyxia, broodmother of the Black Dragonflight. The blade’s triumphant return to its full glory brought great joy to the night elves, who thought the blade lost forever. Its sister blade, however, followed a different path. This writeup contains spoilers from the Quel’delar questline and should be avoided if you want to be surprised when Patch 3.3 launches.
