Shade : He constructed a World Tree without the blessing of the dragon flights, causing a tree that is warped and corrupted enough that it’s being invaded by harpies, grell and grelkin, and corrupting the furbolgs that are supposed to be living happily on it. A tree that invites the invasion of satyr — and the satyr are referenced in the War of the Ancients trilogy as being products of Sargeras, warping some dude with a god complex. Silithus ? He defended Silithus once, yes — and watched his son ripped apart before his eyes in the process. That broke him. He shattered the Sceptre of the Shifting Sands , the key to opening the Gates of Ahn’Qiraj , when the dragon flights asked him to keep guard over it in the event that the Qiraj returned. He said he was done with the dragon flights and done with protecting the place. His last words upon leaving the scene were as follows: “My son’s soul will find no comfort in this hollow victory, dragon. I will have him back. Though it takes millennia, I will have my son back!” You want to know what he’s doing with the morrowgrain? He’s trying to find a way to use it to bring his son back from the dead. He may have been a “leader” at some point, but after the War of the Shifting Sands , everything — and I mean everything — that man does is somehow related to his son’s death. … well, at least, that’s what I’m putting my money on. World of Warcraft and Philosophy got released a little while back — it’s a book by Luke Cuddy and John Nordlinger that examines WoW-related topics like roleplaying and the Corrupted Blood plague , and ties them into philsophical ideas and thinking. TechFlash has now posted an interview with Nordlinger , and it’s a good read as well. Nordlinger says that one reason they chose to talk about World of Warcraft in this way is that it’s so incredibly big — when you have 12 million (give or take a few at this point) people playing a game with a GDP larger than some smaller nations, you’re going to touch on all sorts of interesting ethical, moral, and other philosophical ideas. He says the book has been pretty popular, and a few universities are currently considering teaching courses based on the material, not only because it’s interesting, but thinking about the game in this way helps improve abstract thinking in general. And perhaps most interesting, he says that reading the book could help players better make ethical and moral decisions in the game. Just ninja-ing the mount from an Onyxia raid might not mean much to you, but when you look at the bigger picture, and what those actions mean for ethics in general, Nordlinger says the book might help players “make more aware decisions, if not different decisions.” Of course, in practice, trying to explain higher philosophy to ninjas might not have the desired effect, but it does seem true that exploring the higher meanings of this game and the intents of the people playing it might put a little more meaning into the pixels as well. Has this feature suddenly been turned into Around Arkham Asylum? Not quite, although I might be game for an Around Rapture feature sometime in mid-February. This max-distance shot of the mage quarters in Stormwind, submitted by Wrezolution of Twilight’s Hammer-EU, is indeed startlingly reminiscent of something you’d see while dressed in a cape and hanging upside-down from a gargoyle. Watch out when you glide kick, though — it’s a heck of a long way to the ground here. Pilgrim’s Bounty ends tonight at 1 minute before midnight, server time. That means today is the last day to do the following: Get really frustrated fighting people for wild turkeys . Hit people in the head with cranberries. Crash the opposing faction’s dinner parties. Coerce a druid for a chance at the Raven Lord while wearing Puritan attire . Go from 0 to 350+ in Cooking quickly, easily, cheaply . Even if you aren’t interested in chasing turkeys and looking like a Mayflower reject, I highly recommend taking advantage of leveling Cooking. To get the Winter Veil Gourmet during the Feast of Winter Veil , you’ll need 325 cooking. And of course there are all of those yummy food buffs. Our podcast (which is nominated for a Podcast Award , by the way — this is the last time we’ll ask you to vote for us over there, since voting ends on November 30th) is headed back to the virtual airwaves as usual, and this week we’re bringing two new voices into the mix. We’ll welcome not only C. Christian Moore , informally known as Colby, to the show (he’s the new author of our PvP Blood Sport column), but also Kelly Aarons, informally known as Cadistra, both of WoW Eh and our brand new comic here on WoW.com . Should be a lot of fun — they’ll chat with Turpster and I about the biggest stories of the past week, including Pilgrim’s Bounty and some superfast cooking leveling, the game’s 5th anniversary and what things were like back when it all began , and this GDKP system everyone’s using , as well as other player-created looting systems. Sounds like a full show (and that doesn’t even include answering your emails and our other silliness). Every week, Raid Rx will help you quarterback your healers to victory! Your host is Matt Low , the grand poobah of World of Matticus and a founder of No Stock UI , a WoW blog for all things UI, macro, and addon related. A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned the idea of using spells based around procs or on-use trinkets. Now I don’t know about you, but I sometimes tend to forget that I have these on-use abilities. Other times I never notice procs going off. But first, what is a proc anyway? A proc is short for procedure. They are events that happen when conditions are triggered. For example, Val’anyr will trigger a buff for the user when they heal players. This buff then grants the player to place shields on anyone they heal. Warning: There’s some slightly not-safe-for-work imagery at the opening of this video. I’ve stared pretty intently at the film. And while there’s not much that would directly lead it to an “R” rating, it’s still a little risque for the cubicle farm. Try to watch this one at home. Bad Romance by Quixotica came highly recommended to me by Selserene . How could I not leap to check out a video with that kind of recommendation? When I viewed the film, I was in no way disappointed. Quixotica managed to create a breathtaking, beautiful video. Some of the dialogue is a little funny. “Purr for daddy” has become one of my favorite joke-lines around the house, and you can imagine how much my beloved fiancee loves hearing it. But I think Quixotica created this video with that kind of satire in mind, and I think she really drove home the genre and theme of her video. It’s about betrayal and hope, and she relies on a certain level of tongue-in-cheek self-awareness to keep those themes from becoming over-powering. If it had been any more over the top, it would have entered Twi light levels of angsty silliness. Quixotica should be commended for her artistic vision, and her ability to bring together video imagery with a wonderful soundtrack. I truly hope she picks up a second installment for this video, because I’d like to see where the story goes. Interested in the wide world of machinima ? With all this five year anniversary stuff going on, and the new push by Blizzard for subscribers via the TV commercials and special offers , I’ve been thinking about what it would take for me to leave WoW . What would my point be where I quit the game, unsubscribe, and not return to playing it? I think likely it would be a slow death. I’d log in less and less, until I found that I wouldn’t log in for months at a time. At that point I’d probably be sensible and cancel my account — although it took an inordinate amount of time for me to cancel my EQII account where I did more or less the same thing. I’d like to think this is how it’d go at least, I wouldn’t want to quit in a huff over some silly bug or class change. Of course, this is WoW , and I find myself uniquely invested in it. I’ve got characters with hundreds of days worth of /played on them, and I don’t know yet if I could ever stop myself from being able to have immediate access to them. They are a hobby, and investment, just like a detailed model airplane or schooner. Then there’s also what I do here, which gives me a little unique reason not to ever unsubscribe. But alas, it might happen one day. And that’s the topic of today’s breakfast nook discussion. When will you quit playing WoW ? How will you go out? With a bang or a whimper? Two Bosses Enter … but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com’s series of fantasy death matches. This season’s combatants come from the original five-man instances of Wrath of the Lich King . We’ve got adds here, people: it’s Gortok Palehoof (Utgarde Pinnacle) versus Krik’thir the Gatewatcher (Azjol-Nerub). Gortok steps into the Thunderdome fresh from a resounding defeat of Lavanthor , while Krik’thir arrives after besting the Commander Stoutbeard/Kolurg from The Nexus. Let’s review the ground rules: Assume that the opponents share similar levels, health pools and comparative overall damage output. New clarification : All of the competitors’ abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents. This deathmatch takes place in neutral territory, which shall in no way hinder either opponent from using his usual resources. Don’t get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter. Don’t neglect style, story and scale. Let the doors open, and let the contestants come forward.
