There are a number of things to consider before you get a new priest underway. When it comes to priest leveling, it is paramount to decide if you want to level as a group based healer, a solo focused killing machine or a balanced all purpose character. Priest shines as (arguably) the best healer in the game, and if you want to level predominantly using the new 5man dungeon group finder than being a healer is going to be your best bet, you can start running 5man dungeons as early as level 13! Your first mission is to Ragefire Chasm, but don’t worry if doesn’t go smoothly, at such early levels nobody has any of their truly class defining skills yet.

Holy is the go to spec for healing in PvE, it also contains some boots to holy based outgoing damage which can make soloing easier. Some players argue that the deep holy talent Lightwell is a poor choice due to the fact that to be healed by it, the wounded player must click it. However it does offer interesting utility for both PvP and certain raiding situations. Discipline on the other hand is a balanced spec, one centered on healing and endurance in equal proportions. This tree also takes the class defining trait of being able to cast power word shield and enhances its abilities with things like reflected damage, and healing the shielded target. Most people consider Discipline to be a PvP focused spec, however it can do quite well as a primary healing build as well; even boosting offensive powers via general spell casting improvements.

Shadow, is the black sheep so to speak of Priest Leveling talent trees. While Shadow turns you into a sort of non healing armored mage, and is great for solo play as well as in situations where there are too many healers it does not highlight the group centric play that defines the class best. Most players also discount Shadow specialization for leveling because it is not until level 40+ that the actual Shadowform itself becomes available.

In your early levels a suitable wand will be your best friend. You will want to open with a DOT (damage over time) like shadow word pain, drop a direct attack like smite or later holy fire and then you finish off the foe in question with your wand. Practice wanding while you heal in 5mans as something to keep you busy when no heals are necessary, which can be quite often if you make frequent use of renew. A wand is best used against trivial enemies or in combination with other moves.

When it comes to picking other weapons consider only the supporting stats. As soon as you get your first wand, fighting with your staff or mainhand offhand combination becomes a waste of time. For low level priests seeking upgrades from the auction house a combination of items “of the owl” and “of the eagle” will give you a well rounded mana pool from intellect, mana regeneration from spirit and health from stamina. Stamina as a stat grows vastly more important if you intend to PvP, some early PvP priests sacrifice spirit almost entirely to boost their Stamina and Intellect. Drink more and die less being their motto. After level 60 spell power and critical strike rating become more important, and more available on gear. At the time of this guide spell power is the most important stat for a healing Priest, though a change to intellect is on the horizon in the cataclysm expansion.

Wether you are Priest leveling or otherwise, the class is best used as a support character. You will have the best luck gaining quick experience in groups, and guilds making the social aspect rather more important than for other classes. Be polite and friendly, get to know your tanks and apply renew liberally in anticipation of damage, it will save you time, and make you seem more skilled. In battle be quick to cast shields and renew, and understand that people might not always be willing or able to directly protect you. Keep your defense skill high by completing occasional world quests and allowing yourself to take some when it won’t kill you. A coddled Priest with no soloing experience or defense rating from being hit drops quickly, expand your personal skills so that you can be a pillar of strength and not a limiting necessity.
