In the last four weeks, since Christmas in fact, there have been a number of new scams designed to rob you of your account. Sadly for many people, the lures that they offer have proved too much. Accounts have been lost.

Apparently there is a scam that invites the player to join a fictitious \”Alpha\” test for \”Cataclysm\”. You hand over your account name and password then…Well nothing, they steal your account. There is no official Alpha test for Cataclysm. Within minutes you account is hacked, your bank (and in all likelihood your guild bank) is ransacked and if you are high level, your account is offered for sale to a third party.

Also, watch out for special offers from sites looking exactly like the Warcraft Armory (if it doesn\’t begin with the exact URL armory suffix for your region, then it\’s not really the armory). Again, you sign up for the offers, next thing you know your account is stolen.

What steps should you take if your account is stolen?

First, unless they have secured your account with an authenticator, you should be able to get your password back – even if it has been changed – through Blizzards password retrieval form

If you are successful, then change your account password again, and the contact e-mail if you can. Choose something very obscure. Mix upper and lower case letters and numbers. Use whatever special characters you can.

If this is a new scam, one you have not heard of, then do everyone a favour and post on the Warcraft forums. Let others know the details. Be that hero!

Get in touch with Blizzard. E-mail Blizzard technical support ASAP. You will have a step advantage when it comes to proving the account is actually yours.

Finally, consider getting an authenticator yourself. So far no account with these devices has been reported as lost or hacked. It\’s an extra one off cost, but if (like me) you\’ve ever lost an account, you\’ll know how valuable it seems.

Once you have taken these steps, it\’s best to get in touch with your Guild mates online (assuming you are in a guild). Let them know what\’s happening. Your character will more than likely be going after the guild bank, and spoiling your good name in the process.

This is an avoidable problem. Look after your account, secure your guild. Consider getting extra security.

Good Luck.
